3rd Grade Quarry Trip

Third Graders traveled to the Stoneco Quarry  to learn about quarry safety and how the rocks are mined.  The students got to do many activities like mining a cupcake.

Third graders observed several soil samples from around the country.  They even got to paint with 4 of the soil samples.

4th Grade Scientists at Work

Fourth graders have been busy with lots of activities and projects in science!  They are currently researching landforms to see how weathering, erosion, and deposition help shape the surface of Earth.

Mrs. Prichard's class is working together to solve a word puzzle.  The answer to the puzzle must rhyme.  This gets everybody thinking.  I wonder who will solve it?

Dog Toys in School?

Fourth grade teachers and students have been busy working in their reading groups.  Each student receives 25 minutes of reading instruction daily with other similar readers.  Mrs. Fleming's reading group has been working on how-to presentations.  Shown is a student working on how to make a toy for your dog.

Putting together toothpicks and marshmallows to construct 3-D squares and rectangles is a fun way to do geometry.  Mrs. Chiles students need lots of patience to get them just right!  I wonder if anyone tasted just one?

Leprechaun Trap!

Math Games are Fun!

Math games are a great way to practice all our new skills!  Mrs. Short joins a group for a little fun. These games offer enjoyable ways to practice certain math skills, especially ones that help children develop math fact power!

Salsa Words

Fourth grade students have been studying the writing trait of word choice.  Students in Miss Honigford's 4th grade class snacked on rice cakes and chips and salsa as they created exciting "salsa" words to use instead of plain "rice cake" words.

Common Core Writing

The Common Core State Standards have changed the way we do business at Van Wert Elementary School.  These First Grade students are working to achieve the ambious writing levels set forth by the new standards.  Shown are some of Mrs. Hoffman's students, who have recently published their first narrative pieces.

Box Top Pizza Winners!

Third graders brought in the most Box Tops during a school wide competion to earn a pizza party.  Students enjoyed eating their pizza Friday afternoon.  Thank you to all the students who brought in Box Tops to earn money for our school.   

3rd Grade AR Mystery Party

  02/03/13
Third graders were busy reading last nine weeks to accomplish their Accelerated Reading goal.  Students who met their points goal and were 85% or higher for their accuracy on their reading quizzes got to enjoy the AR Mystery Party.  The students came down to the gym to enjoy a version of Minute to Win It.  There were several stations students competed to beat the clock.  Thank you to all the wonderful parents who were able to help make this an enjoyable event for all the students hard work.

Electrifying!

Students in Miss Holden's 4th grade science classes have been learning about energy and electricity.  Last week they practiced creating their own circuits using D-cell batteries, wire, and flashlight bulbs.  Shown are two students in Mrs. Hicks' homeroom class testing objects to determine which ones were good conductors.
